Google Docs Update

Recently Google Docs has changed the way it renders documents to the browser.  It now renders an image canvas instead of the actual document text.  This means any extensions that need access to the document text no longer works, including Read Aloud.

As recommended by Google, we developed a Google Workspace addon that will provide text-to-speech function specifically for Google Docs.  The addon is now available on the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Here is how to install and use the Read Aloud Google Workspace addon.

INSTALLATION

1) Click on the Add-ons menus in Google Docs

2) Use the search box to find the Read Aloud addon

3) Open the item and click the blue 'Install' button

USAGE (AFTER INSTALLATION)

1) Opening the Read Aloud sidebar

2) Use the Play button in the sidebar to start reading aloud

    1. This is a Google Docs add-on that only works inside Google Docs. For other sites, please use the Read Aloud browser extension.

  9. The high price it must be when it comes to using your eyes to read... you don't have to use ReadAloud for EVERYTHING. :)

  12. They updated the extension for google docs and it forces you to use the addon now. The addon forces you to use their shitty standard voices that are god awful and sound terrible. I like using google wavenet voices but the addon will not allow it. This addon feature should be an option and not a mandatory feature as it literally ruined the entire functionality of the extension within google docs. Hopefully they fix the extension by removing forced functionalities.

  18. Well nothing good lasts forever. I loved the previous Read Aloud as it helped me to make sure my writing was perfect (relatively speaking). Now I can't use it on Documents created after this fix, patch, hodgepodge of idiocy, what have you. So Thank you (whomever is responsible) for fixing something that wasn't broken and breaking it. I expect nothing to change or even be looked at. Now I guess I should expect a reply from some erroneous two-bit or some staff member who's just as inept, incompetent... an idiot. So there's that to relish and dread. But then again, a wise man once said: "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons." So have at it.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. As explained atop, Google has changed the way it renders Google Docs, and the only way to make Read Aloud work now is via a separate add-on. We wish as much as you do it weren't this way!

    4. I don't think the introduction of the google workspace is a result of stupidity. Google is laying foundation for future imposition of fees for using features therein to generate income. Hopefully other platform will come to compete with google so that they will be more liberal in providing useful free apps.

  19. I'm confused why this add on won't work for me. I've tried using it by highlighting info, switching the settings up, and definitely messing with my computer volume. I'm using chrome but someone on here said they used chrome and it worked for them. Tell me what I'm missing? I've even tried to uninstall and downloading again.

  21. It would be nice if I could see the estimated time for each reading speed. For example, if I keep the reading speed at normal, I want to know that the highlighted section will require 5 minutes of listening. I'll be looking for this update

  24. It keeps saying that I need to "install read-aloud," but I already have it installed. I've tried re-installing and restarting Google Chrome..... no luck. Any tips?

  25. I spent a bunch of time trying to get this to read a Google doc and even the extension is non-functioning. I even closed my browser and restarted it to see if that would help after installing it. Nope. This app and the extension are pretty useless if they don't work as stated.

  26. When arriving close to a new paragraph, pause/stop reading doesn't work.
So can you see how stop reading deals with new paragraph. certainly a variable must be changed.

  27. This just doesn't work. I've followed the instructions and keep hitting the same wall - no voice at all comes out. This is a matter of accessibility, why would you force your users to shift to an app that doesn't work? This is utterly ridiculous.

  28. Really doesn't work for Google Doc. I waited for a long time until it started reading, one sentence. And it stopped. And waiting, long time, then the 2nd sentence... when am I to finish a whole page at this rate? Not to say it's breaking up the content so much this way...

I miss the previous add on that read smoothly... and I like how the add-on icon could sit in the bookmark bar, so convenient to start a reading. Now I need to go the Google Doc menu, click into "Add ons", navigate to "Read Aloud", and after selecting it then wait (yes, more waiting) for it to load a panel on the right, which is taking up so much space.

I read above that it's all because Google changes the way they render the document. But will there be a more elegant way of handling this? It's just not working, the way it is now.

  31. I don't know why the Google Workspace add-on is introduced but the functionality is curtailed, ie unable to read just the part highlighted

  32. I have installed the addon as mentioned above. I press the triangle in the green circle and nothing happens. There is no indication as to what is wrong or what I should do.

    So, what do I do???
